CHOICE SKILL BUILDER 3: SPIRIT
The Values Alignment Compass
Focus: Spiritual Discernment — Does this choice fit who God made you to be?
Time: 2 min presentation + 5–10 min activity
Materials: Paper and a pen
Presenter Script (≈2 Minutes)
The Body skill builder trained your brain’s brakes. The Mind skill builder trained your brain’s ability to see the future. But there’s a third dimension to every choice that logic alone can’t solve.
Have you ever made a decision that looked perfect on paper — better pay, better title, better opportunity — but something inside you felt off? A knot in your stomach. A restlessness you couldn’t explain.
That’s your spirit talking. And it matters.
A choice can be logical and still be wrong for you. It can make sense to your mind but grieve your spirit. The Bible calls this the “still small voice” — that quiet inner knowing that shows up when we slow down enough to listen.
This activity gives you a simple framework to check any choice against four spiritual markers: Peace, Purpose, Counsel, and Outcome. It takes about five minutes, a sheet of paper, and a willingness to be honest with yourself.
Activity: The Values Alignment Compass
Setup (30 seconds)
- Draw a large cross on your paper, dividing it into 4 quadrants.
- Label them: Peace (top left), Purpose (top right), Counsel (bottom left), Outcome (bottom right).
- Take three slow breaths. Ask God to be present in this process.
Quadrant 1: Peace
The Consolation Check
Imagine you’ve already said “yes” to this choice. Sit with that for 10 seconds. Then write: Do you feel expansion (peace, relief, lightness) or contraction (dread, tightness, anxiety)?
Be honest. Don’t overthink it. Your gut often knows before your head does.
Quadrant 2: Purpose
The Identity Check
Complete this sentence in writing: “I am a child of God who values ___.” (Fill in a core value: integrity, generosity, health, faithfulness, courage.)
Now ask: Does this choice bring me closer to that identity or pull me further away?
Quadrant 3: Counsel
The Wisdom Check
Picture someone you deeply admire for their wisdom — a grandparent, a mentor, a biblical figure, Jesus himself. Imagine they’re sitting next to you.
Write down what they would say about this choice. Start with: “My child, pay attention to…”
Quadrant 4: Outcome
The Legacy Check
Fast forward five years. Look back at this moment. Write: Will you be proud of this choice? Is this part of a story you want to tell — or something you’d rather forget?
Regarding Your Compass
If 3 or 4 quadrants align, the path ahead is likely clear. If they conflict — say, your mind says “yes” but your spirit says “not yet” — that’s not confusion. That’s wisdom telling you to rest and wait. In CREATION Life, Rest is often the prerequisite for clarity.
Facilitator Tip
This is different from the Consequence Map on purpose. The Consequence Map asks “What will happen?” The Values Compass asks “Does this fit who I am?” A job offer might ace the Consequence Map (more money, shorter commute) and fail the Compass (less time with family, misaligned values). You need both tools for a whole-person decision
Going Deeper
Encourage participants to use this 4-quadrant grid as a daily prayer journal for a week. Each morning, apply it to the day’s biggest decision. Watch how clarity sharpens with practice.
